National Dance Project Production Grant

Built around an embrace in motion, tango demands a continuous connection between partners. By contrast, contemporary dance exalts the meaning of individual movement. These disparate forms converse, grapple, and meld with emotion in Sin Salida, a collaboration between French-Argentinian tango company Union Tanguera and the namesake company founded by choreographer and 2014 Guggenheim grant awardee Kate Weare. Inspired by philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre and the melding of these two dance forms, Sin Salida (literally, No Exit) explores a common human predicament: One needs another to perceive one’s self. With the dynamism Gustavo Beytelman’s music and its cross continental vision, Sin Salida faces a moment when cultures, countries, and identities can drift apart, but insists that we can only hold onto ourselves by listening to each other.
Estimated artist fee: $20,000/performance; $45,000/week.
