ALAXSXA | ALASKA is a multidisciplinary theater project by Ping Chong and Ryan Conarro, weaving puppetry, video, and Alaska Native drum and dance. It features Conarro and Gary Upay’aq Beaver (Central Yup’ik)—two very different sorts of Alaskans—and puppetry by Justin Perkins in a collage of stories about identity and belonging in the Last Frontier. What makes one an “Alaskan,” or a citizen of any place? What are the inevitable changes of self, society, and ecology when newcomers to a place choose to stay? Audience members join in exploring cross cultural encounter through story circles and documentary materials.
