First performed by Marc Bamuthi Joseph in 2003, "Word Becomes Flesh" is an honest and lyrical series of performed letters from a father to an unborn son. With an ensemble cast and a live DJ, "Word Becomes Flesh" uses spoken word, dance, Hip-Hop theater, and live music to create a powerful narrative of nine months of pregnancy from a young single father's perspective. Fusing together tender stories, playful wit, and at times purposeful rage, the play gives voice to the complexities and contradictions surrounding race and gender in America.
