2026 will mark the 250th year of U.S. independence. This project aims to honor the quest for freedom and independence by the many peoples of our nation over the past two centuries. Spatial justice posits that the way places are organized can create or reinforce inequalities. Similarly, historical narrative is not neutral. Who gets centered in our country's history and whose freedom struggles are uplifted has not been equitable. With this in mind, a mural project celebrating freedom and independence will be developed by graffiti artists Sobek, Fred Ones, Menace, and Resa in an area bordering two historically marginalized communities in Boston: Roxbury & Dorchester. Graffiti, as a public art form that has been maligned, misunderstood, and has battled erasure, is an ideal form with which to reflect on ideas of freedom and independence. This project will also engage local residents in an interactive day of activities to celebrate the concepts of freedom and independence.
