UMS presents the dance company Camille A. Brown & Dancers in a multi-day residency in February 2016 that will include one performance of Ms. Brown’s new work, “BLACK GIRL: Linguistic Play” (working title) and related engagement and contextual activities. BLACK GIRL is a multimedia work that depicts the complexities of carving out a positive identity as a Black female in urban American culture. Using the writings of Angela David, bell hooks, Toni Morrison, and Melissa Harris-Perry as inspiration, along with community-based participatory research, the work will examine the politics of pleasure, the concept of patriarchy, and contemporary notions of beauty for black women.
