SPACE will host global music legends, The Garifuna Collective for a concert and workshop in Portland, Maine. The Garifuna Collective are an internationally touring 8-piece ensemble based in Belize that has has won Womex and BBC World Music Awards and been named “#1 World Music Album of All Time” (besting albums by Bob Marley, Celia Cruzand , Ravi Shankar) by Amazon Music. They are descendents of and cultural ambassadors for the Garifuna people— an Afro-indigenous people from the Caribbean island of St. Vincent. Descendents of shipwrecked slave ships in the 1600s that resisted European colonization for over a century, the Garifuna number around 300,000 people today. Their defiant culture has persisted in communities in Honduras, Belize, Guatemala and Nicaragua, where their distinctive language, customs and music are preserved and continue to evolve.
