Untitled Land is a series of artistic investigations into public space and who it is for. The project recontextualizes common hostile architecture patterns and homeless deterrence tactics, collaborating with communities on the ground to imagine and design alternatives (architectures, policies, and cultural strategies). Organized walks will invite public data collectors to audit exclusionary spatial tactics, while distributed zines will explore local histories of activism by and for unhoused communities. The project will culminate in a public performance series featuring live classical music and poetry by unhoused writers. In one of the country’s least affordable cities, Untitled Land reflects on what is collectively lost when public spaces are enclosed, overpoliced, and made deliberately or passively cruel to some.
