Next Stage Arts will present Gamelan Galak Tika, a performing group at the forefront of innovative, cross-cultural music for Balinese gamelan since 1993. Founded at MIT by Evan Ziporyn, Desak Madé Suarti Laksmi, and I Nyoman Catra, Galak Tika is currently directed by Gusti Komin, drawing its membership from across the Boston community as well as MIT students and staff. The name “Galak Tika” is Bahasa Kawi (classical Javanese, a dialect of Sanskrit) for “intense togetherness.”
Presentation of Gamelan Galak Tika serves to bring cultural diversity and awareness to the rural community of Putney, Vermont. The group’s concert performance and community engagement activities will work to provide education and connection to Indonesian music, tradition, and culture. This is a unique opportunity for the region, as world music is not often made accessible to the general public in Southern Vermont. Next Stage hopes to broaden cultural horizons, and increase cultural awareness for young Vermonters.
