Mayo Street Arts

Mayo Street Arts will present a solo balafon concert by Balla Kouyaté for the public in its intimate performance venue. The balafon, made of wooden slats and calabash gourds that serve as natural amplifiers, has a long lineage among the Malinké people of West Africa dating back 800 years. Kouyaté will also perform a solo concert for more than 420 students in grades PK–5 at East End Community School. Both performances will be followed by a Q&A with the artist. In addition, Kouyaté will participate in an annual gathering of Maine-based traditional artists hosted by the Traditional Arts Network.
