Through Liquid Spine, I will be developing a new, contemporary dance work titled Bycatch, which will explore the destruction caused by commercial fishing industries, especially bottom trawling: a devastating industrial fishing practice that drags massive, weighted nets across the ocean floor, indiscriminately capturing or destroying everything in their path.

I will translate this devastation into a deeply human experience. I want to draw parallels between the vulnerability of marine life and our own experiences of erasure, second-hand trauma, exploitation, and helplessness. Through this lens, I hope to evoke a stirring, emotional reaction from audiences that encourages them to act and keep our oceans healthy and thriving.

While creating and presenting this work, my cast and I will be working with the New England Coastal Wildlife Alliance. Through two residencies on Cape Cod, we will volunteer with them as both an extension of our creative research and our environmental mission.
