FirstWorks is thrilled to connect RI audiences with the music and activism of the Garifuna Collective, bringing the rich Afro-Indigenous language and culture of the Garifuna people to “FirstWorks Summer Beats” concert series at Roger Williams Park. For over 10 years, The Garifuna Collective has pushed the boundaries of their dynamic, centuries-old musical traditions, breaking new ground with performances that show why UNESCO calls the language, dance, and music of the Garifuna people of Central America a “Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.”

The Garifuna Collective has created feverish dance floors in over 30 countries across 5 continents and received the Womex and BBC World Music Award and Amazon’s “Number One World Music Album of All Time” title for their album Wátina. Through a free live concert and community engagements, we will bring multigenerational families together for a joyous community gathering in a non-traditional performance setting.
