Continuing her explorations of Black Joy, choreographer Camille A. Brown will create a new work for her company, Camille A. Brown & Dancers, tentatively called I AM. The title is inspired by an episode from the Lovecraft Country series called, I AM. Inspired by the rhythms of the movie Drumline, the work launches queries into the possibilities of imagination, investigating the past to boldly reimagine it.
While Brown has often upended our understanding of the past, in this new work she will invite audiences to imagine a creative space for cultural liberation—conjuring new ways of being in this world. This work builds on Brown’s earlier unearthing of Black joyfulness in BLACK GIRL: Linguistic Play and ink.
Estimated Artist Fee: $40,000/performance; $55,000/week
