Tracing Sacred Steps is an evening-length work that blends modern dance, social justice practice, figure skating and Ring Shout. It features an all-Black cast of 8 professional skating artists from around the US and a MN-based actor/vocalist. It will premiere in spring 2022 at Highland Ice Arena in St. Paul, MN, for an audience of 500+, with potential tours to Jacob’s Pillow, the Yard, and the Painted Bride. The performance cultivates relationships with local Black communities, surrounding the performances with multiple engagement events.
Brownbody is based on the land of the Wahpekute and Očhéthi Šakówiŋ Peoples (St. Paul/Minneapolis, MN). Minnesota is home to seven Anishinaabe (Ojibwe) and four Dakota nations. We are able to do our work because of the people that have and continue to protect and care for these lands.
Estimated Artist Fee: $64,225/performance or $75,325/week long residency
