Shifting Sands, Imaginary Homelands is an immersive dance and sensory work that transforms existing venues into breathing, moving installations animated by live music, textile design, culinary ritual, poetry, and participatory action, as a means to illuminate South Asian diasporic womanhood. Audiences travel through a sequence of dance environments which question concepts of Americanness and tradition, and interrogate also how authenticity is performed, negotiated, demanded, and weaponized. It explores unspoken demands placed on first-generation daughters of South Asian and other Global Majority immigrants in the U.S. The work compels patrons to actively contrast physical ephemera against the ephemeral: dance and food, oral history and memory, to create a singular and transformative collective experience.

Estimated Artist Fee: Fee range: $28,000 - $48,000 half-full week residency not including travel and accommodations, including a variety of exciting community engagement activities (Breaking Bread Event, Workshops, Virtual Discussions).
Varying fees depend on scale, usage of local artistic collaborators (local chef, scent designer, dancers, live musicians), adaptability of sites including need to build out vs. use existing structures, e.g. taking over the loading docks and basements of a theatre or a library or museum vs. building out a warehouse. Strongly suggest a full week residency period for immersive work of this nature in order to elicit participation of local artists in the work, and to customize and scale for presenter sites.
