FREEDOM COMES WHEN ONE WALKS THROUGH IT is a dance-based public art project connecting public libraries—designed to inspire belonging—with prisons—designed for punishment, ostracization, and cruel indifference. It will juxtapose the best and worst of these two American institutions, exploring testimony from currently incarcerated women regarding their paths to freedom. It will uplift their struggle and honor how the soul gets free. FREEDOM COMES Centers the work of April Harris, a writer serving a life sentence at the California Institution for Women, choreographer Jo Kreiter, and composer Kalyn Harewood.
Caretakers of Land/Land Acknowledgement: Flyaway Productions acknowledges that we are creating art on the unceded ancestral homeland of the Ramaytush Ohlone, who are the original inhabitants of the San Francisco Peninsula. As the Indigenous stewards of this land and in accordance with their traditions, the Ramaytush Ohlone have never ceded, lost, nor forgotten their responsibilities as the caretakers of this place, despite genocide and forced removals . We recognize that we benefit from living and working on their traditional homeland. We respectfully acknowledge the ancestors, elders, and current artists of and adjacent to the Ramaytush Ohlone community and affirm their sovereign rights as First Peoples. This acknowledgement is accompanied by an annual donation to the Ramaytush Ohlone via the Amalgamated Foundation.
