Sonic American Census is an experimental dance and sound performance exploring how we perceive and imagine one another. Every person has a physical and sonic signature; our lived experiences and ancestral echoes reverberate through our footsteps. Spatialized audio moves each dancer’s “sonic body” through space, allowing us to hear the choreography before seeing the dancers. The piece asks how unconscious bias shapes what we imagine, and how sound is racialized and gendered. Vibrating subwoofers make the dancers’ sonic presence physical, allowing Deaf and hard-of-hearing audiences to experience the work through their bodies. Four dancers perform in adaptable black box or flexible spaces with modular seating.

Estimated Artist Fee: One week engagement: $24,000 (up to 3 performances plus community engagements including but not limited to workshops, talks, etc.) Does not include housing and travel. Touring personnel includes 7-9 people
