Ululations is a groundbreaking interdisciplinary devised theater piece by composer Elisabet Curbelo, centering deaf artists through a blend of American Sign Language (ASL), movement, and technology. Inspired by two poems by Federico García Lorca, this four-part composition for soprano, percussion, piano, and five deaf dancers explores oppression, communication, community, and transcendence. The performers communicate solely through ASL, creating a gestural language integral to the narrative. Deaf dancers, using motion sensors, generate electronic sounds and video projections, with their movements shaping the sonic and visual landscape. This collaborative process merges multiple art forms, redefining communication between deaf and hearing communities and fosters a shared sensory experience.
