(Boston, MA) Lawrence J. Simpson, board chair of the New England Foundation for the Arts (NEFA), announced that Karen Mittelman, Ph.D., has joined NEFA’s board of directors. Mittelman is the recently appointed executive director of the Vermont Arts Council.

Mittelman was previously director of the Division of Public Programs at the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) in Washington, D.C. She brings to the Arts Council more than thirty years of experience in the public sector and the federal cultural arena. In addition to the NEH, Mittelman held a senior position at the National Museum of American Jewish History in Philadelphia and served as curator at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington.

“Vermont has a deep commitment to the arts,” said Mittelman. “I look forward to the work our State Arts Council can do with NEFA to help support our artists and arts organizations as we partner to contribute to the state’s – and the region’s – cultural and economic vibrancy.”

About NEFA
The New England Foundation for the Arts invests in the arts to enrich communities in New England and beyond. NEFA accomplishes this by granting funds to artists and cultural organizations; connecting them to each other and their audiences; and analyzing their economic contributions. NEFA serves as a regional partner for the National Endowment for the Arts, New England’s state arts agencies, and private foundations. Learn more at www.nefa.org.
