A Rap on Race, an evening-length devised dance/theater work by Donald Byrd and Anna Deavere Smith, centers on a ground-breaking conversation on race between writer James Baldwin and anthropologist Margaret Mead recorded in 1970. Byrd and Deavere Smith used various renditions of the conversation to explore virtuosity, tonality, rhythm, texture, and multiple theatrical devices and approaches to ”suss out” the text for signs of its ”virtues.” Through an investigation of dance, movement, text, and music, A Rap on Race excavates new meaning from this cultural artifact that enlivens the current conversation around racial and cultural equality. Estimated artist fee: $24,000/performance (plus housing and local transportation); $45,000/week (plus housing and local transportation).
