Like a Bee is a new dance work that explores lineage, matriarchy, and perceptions of the immigrant body as a site of strength, labor, and care. Rooted in my experience growing up within immigrant culture, my exploration of the matriarchal perspective centers the needs of the collective, and the concept of labor not just as a means, but as a craft and a purpose. The work will feature 6 performers accompanied by live music by Thai-born drummer, producer, and composer Salin and her band. The unique score merges afro-jazz, funk, and indigenous Thai instruments and serves as the heartbeat and drive of the journey. Like A Bee invites audiences to consider our shared responsibility in how we care for ourselves and one another, in increasingly productivity-driven societies, and across different stages of life.
