This project is envisioned as a funeral-performance-ritual-meditation honoring the life and legacy of Putep, the most famous whale in Lubec, Maine. Rooted in months of ethnographic study and embodied movement research, the performance unfolds in four parts—life, death, decay, and bone—each reflecting a stage in the cycle of existence. The work is designed to move beyond traditional performance, carried into coastal communities and transforming shared spaces into sites of reflection and mourning. Through immersive staging, sound, and movement, it invites dialogue about how we might become more attentive stewards of grief—for ourselves, for one another, and for the nonhuman species with whom we share our ecosystems. Caroline will collaborate with local musicians, costume artists, and set designers to create a sensory-rich environment, encouraging audiences to engage as both witnesses and participants in a ritual of care, memory, and ecological awareness.
