New England Foundation for the Arts (NEFA) has awarded $752,500 in National Dance Project (NDP) grants to support the development of new dance works during the 2011-2012 seasons.
Twenty-one contemporary dance artists and companies were selected from over 115 applicants, and will receive NDP grants in amounts ranging from $21,500 to $40,000 to create new work that will tour during the 2012-2013 season. Arts organizations and others interested in presenting these works may apply for funding through NDP’s Presentation Grant program.
Each U.S. grant recipient will also receive a general operating support grant of $10,500 thanks to additional funding from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation. These funds are intended to ensure organizational stability during this extraordinarily challenging economic period.
“The diversity of voices and perspectives in this group of dancemakers, and the demonstration of artistry - from emergent to iconic – is truly extraordinary,” said NEFA executive director Rebecca Blunk. “We are delighted to play a role in sustaining a vibrant dance ecosystem through the National Dance Project.”
Since 1996, NDP has been a primary system of support for the contemporary dance field, supporting the production and touring of new dance works. In a field that has been historically under-funded, NDP is the only national program supporting individual dance artists and companies, whether established, emerging, culturally-specific, or experimental. To date, including these awards, NDP has supported the creation of over 246 new dance works, partnering directly with more than 300 U.S. presenters to connect projects with audiences in all 50 states. Each year, 25 to 30 different dance projects are featured in engagements in an average of 250 communities across the country.
NEFA's National Dance Project is made possible with lead funding from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation and additional funding from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the MetLife Foundation, and the National Endowment for the Arts.
