The Wooster Group collaborates with writer and director Richard Maxwell on a piece based on Eugene O’Neill’s early “sea plays.” Drawing on The Wooster Group’s long-standing relationship with O’Neill’s work, Maxwell uses the prism of these uniquely New England tales of sea people and their native lands to explore the layers of American history and language. Sea Freight Returns brings words to the fore, celebrating an effective American vernacular that feels lived in, yet elevated and sculpturally articulate. The production features Wooster Group company and guest artists in a cross-pollination with Maxwell’s distinctive style.
