Poor People’s TV Room is a new evening-length work by interdisciplinary artist Okwui Okpokwasili and collaborator Peter Born. Combining movement, text, and song, the piece draws from historical and contemporary examples of collective action initiated by African women - from the Nigerian Women’s War of 1929 to the Bring Back Our Girls movement in 2014 - to explore the erasure of women of color in the collective western consciousness. Performed by a multi-generational ensemble of women, the piece will premiere at American Dance Institute in November 2016 followed by a presentation at the Walker Art Center in January 2017, leading to a two-week run at New York Live Arts in April 2017 before launching a national tour. Estimated artist fee: $21,000/ performance, $25,000/week.
