The CreativeGround team regularly solicits user feedback, and we watch for changes and trends in the creative economy. It’s one of the ways we make important updates to the directory, including how users identify their work on the site.

Over the past year, we’ve added or updated more than ten institution and business types based on user feedback.

Institution/Business Type = All enterprises that produce similar products or services are combined into an institution/business type. Some examples from the site include Recording Studios, Historical Societies, and Individual Artists

Mystyic Knotwork, Institution/Business Type - Artist (Individual)

There are 54 Institution/Business Types on the site to choose from. They identify your core role within the creative economy, and they’re one of the primary criteria used when ordering search results. The more accurate your Institution/Business Type on your profile is, the more likely it is your profile will be discovered by the kind of collaborators you want to work with.

Have you checked your profile’s Institution/Business Type lately? Maybe it’s time for an update…

The simple and significant change…

Waterfall Arts, Institution/Business Type - Arts Center

Updating your profile’s Institution/Business Type is a no-brainer. In less than five minutes, you can ensure that your creative enterprise is seen by the right audience. Here’s how…

Castle in the Clouds, Institution/Business Type - Museum (Other)
  1. Go to creativeground.org/user and log into your account.
  2. From the “My Account” page, scroll down to your public profile and select the blue “EDIT PROFILE” link to the right of the profile you wish to edit.
  3. In the EDIT view, scroll down to the “Institution/Business Type” field. You’ll find it in the “About” section, about halfway down the page
  4. Choose from one of the Institution/Business types in the dropdown menu. (Some I/B types may restrict which Legal Status you can select, so be sure to update this field too.)
  5. Scroll to the bottom of the page and save your work by selecting the orange “SAVE” button.

While you’re at it…

Did you know that there are more than 100 creative economy disciplines represented on CreativeGround? There are also more “populations served” and “activities and services” to choose from, including portfolio review, publishing, community arts, and broadcast production. Unlike the Institution/Business types, you can select as many identifiers as you have activities and constituents. This allows you to capture a more nuanced picture of your creative work than can be seen from the Institution/Business types alone.

Each of these designations can be easily searched using either the Advanced Search or Explore feature on the site. Do your own search to get inspiration from peer profiles or to find your next creative collaborator.

Did we miss something?

Let us know if you don’t feel your creative work is represented by the current Institution/Business types and disciplines listed on the site. Several of the types and disciplines on CreativeGround were submitted by users, and yours could be, too!
