Dance is an essential part of an increasingly global dialogue. International partnerships offer opportunities for communities and audiences in the U.S. to engage with artists from other countries, to explore commonalities and differences, and to learn about diverse cultural perspectives. NDP offers a mechanism through which U.S. presenters can identify and present outstanding dance artists from throughout the world, and U.S. audiences can broaden their understanding of diverse dance expressions.

To date, NDP has developed partnerships with the U.K., The Netherlands, Australia, France, and Mexico that have resulted in strong and lasting relationships among artists, presenters, and communities. Currently, NDP has a partnership with France.

French-U.S. Exchange in Dance

The French U.S. Exchange in Dance (FUSED) is an ongoing partnership between NEFA and the Cultural Services of the French Embassy in collaboration with the French American Cultural Exchange (FACE). In 2004, these organizations created FUSED to promote cross-cultural exchange, providing financial support and other resources that allow a reciprocal exchange of U.S. and French artists to the partner country. In addition to funding, FUSED fosters dialogue, consolidates professional relationships, and spawns creative artistry and choreographic innovation through residencies and touring.

NEFA welcomes applications from any U.S. nonprofit presenting institution wishing to support a residency or present a French dance artist/company's work that is new or rarely seen in the U.S.

French presenting institutions wishing to apply for projects with a U.S. dance artist should apply through FACE.

Eligibility

  • Any U.S. or French nonprofit presenting institution may apply.
  • The institution must be a presenter, such as a theater or festival, with a clear financial commitment toward the project (individual performer or company).
  • Applicants may reapply to the Fund for the same project only if the project has developed or changed significantly since the last application.
  • U.S. institutions may submit projects involving at least one French artist (French citizen or legal resident of France for more than five 5 years).
  • Projects must take place between June 1, 2012 and August 31, 2013.

Who may NOT apply:

  • Individual artists, even represented by an operating foundation; grants are not allocated to individual artists.
  • Applications for projects which have already begun are ineligible.

Funding Criteria

Nonprofit presenting institutions in the U.S. may apply for a project with French choreographers/performers in the U.S. (Examples of projects include: a presentation of a French dance production; a residency of the French choreographer/performer).
  • The artist should be appearing in the U.S. for the first time or should be showing work that is new or rarely seen in the U.S.
  • The artist may be an emerging artist or may be an artist already established in his or her career, as long as the project is original and innovative.
  • The U.S. institution must bring significant support.
  • The residency or presentation should make a significant impact on the artist, organization, and/or community.
