NDP has established partnerships that provide additional opportunities for international artists to tour their
work in the U.S., and for U.S. presenters to receive support for their presentation. For the 2009-2010
season, NDP has active partnerships with Australia and France.

Australian Partnership
NEFA and the Australia Council for the Arts collaborated on a multi-year partnership to support the production and touring of Australian dance to the U.S. They are now are in the final year of a three-year partnership which has made possible two tours for the 2006-2007 season as well as two production grants with touring support.
The Australia Council for the Arts has awarded four “Dance Down Under” U.S. Ambassadors for 2005-06. Dance Down Under Ambassadors are U.S.-based dance and performing arts presenters who act as personal advocates for Australian dance companies and artists within the US. These Ambassadors can be helpful in answering questions on Australian dance artists and companies available for touring support through NDP.
The 2006-2007 U.S. Ambassadors were announced at the Australian reception at this year's Association of Performing Arts Presenters (APAP) conference in New York City, and took up their duties in June 2006. They are:
Cathy Edwards, Dance Theater Workshop (New York City, NY)
Erin Boberg Doughton, PICA (Portland, OR)
Ella Baff, Jacob’s Pillow (Lee, MA)
Philip Bither, Walker Center (Minneapolois, MN).
NEFA and NDP are in the fourth year of FUSED, a four-year partnership with the Cultural Services of the
French Embassy and the French American Cultural Exchange (FACE). FUSED was created to promote
cross-cultural exchange while fostering dialogue, establishing professional relationships, and spawning
creative artistry and choreographic innovation through residencies and touring.
FUSED originally formed a core group of partners/curators known for their support of emerging artists
both in France and in the U.S. This past year, the FUSED program was open to applications from any U.S.
presenter wishing to present a French dance artist/company's work that is new or rarely seen in the U.S.
Six venues in the U.S. and seven in France were awarded funds to support residencies and presentation
of work by five French and seven U.S. artists during the 2008-2009 season.

National Dance Project (NDP) of the New England Foundation for the Arts
British Council Partnership Formally launched in the Fall of 2000, this relationship was initially forged to help bring three renowned British dance companies to the United States. Wendy Houstoun, Akram Khan, and Random Dance Company visited New York City in October 2001 to perform as part of UKwithNY, a two-week festival celebrating British excellence and achievements in arts, education, science, technology, business, and tourism. The companies then went on to tour through seven additional communities across the U.S., including Columbus, OH; Pittsburgh, PA; Anchorage, AK; Portland, OR; Burlington, VT; Seattle, WA; and Chicago, IL.
Built on the success of that first venture, NDP and the British Council celebrated their continuing partnership by supporting the 2003-04 U.S. tour of Akram Khan Company and George Piper Dances (a.k.a. the Ballet Boyz) to bring new UK dance to American communities. This new project not only brought together two contemporary companies and a variety of dance styles, but also highlighted the artistry of several prominent and highly acclaimed choreographers including Matthew Bourne, William Forsythe, Akram Khan, Russell Maliphant, and Christopher Wheeldon. Other internationally recognized artists collaborating on the project were musicians Richard English, Philip Glass, and Nitin Sawhney, and sculptor Anish Kapoor. Learn more about this unique project in the George Piper Dances/Akram Khan Company NDP feature.
The British Council works to refresh and update perceptions of the UK by promoting the best of contemporary UK creativity worldwide. To learn more, visit the British Council website.
U.S./Japan Cultural Trade Network (CTN)
An international initiative aimed at facilitating cultural trade between the U.S. and Japan, CTN was co-founded in 2001 by NDP, Arts Midwest, the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, the Japan Foundation, the Tokyo Performing Arts Market, and the Tokyo International Festival. Designed to provide support and context for the exchange of visual and performing arts projects between the two countries, CTN offers a wide variety of services that include: establishing U.S./Japan residencies for visiting artists; co-producing collaborative dance works; sponsoring delegation visits; coordinating research trips for field experts; and organizing seminars, roundtables, and panel discussions at key arts conferences in both nations.
Since its inception, CTN has broadened its influence to include participation by over 12 arts organizations including Japan Contemporary Dance Network, the Nagoya American Center, and Ohio Arts Council. Director of CTN, Kyoko Yoshida, maintains offices at Arts Midwest in Minneapolis, MN. Learn more on the Arts Midwest website.
