Master basketmaker Theresa Secord will work with two apprentices, Erica Maynard (59) and Shannon Secord (17), on advanced techniques in preparation and weaving ash and sweetgrass basketry. Already experienced in basketry, Shannon is currently a youth mentor teacher in Maine Indian Basketmakers Alliance basketry workshops. She hopes to become more proficient in advanced basketry workshops, such as teaching basket covers and other finishing techniques. Erica, Theresa’s cousin, is an elder who was raised away from the reservation and who would also like to learn more advanced skills so that she can pass on the tradition to her own daughter and granddaughter. The overarching goal of the apprenticeship is to ensure that family skills continue to be carried on and that there will be teachers for the next generation of basketmakers in Maine.
