Call to Artists: Germantown Public Art Promenade

 

The City of Germantown Public Art Committee is seeking artwork for the First Annual Sculpture Promenade Project in Germantown, Tennessee.  Dates for the project are October 2012 through August 2013.  The Sculpture Promenade project will be curated by John Weeden, Principal of the Vita Brevis Arts Bureau of Memphis, Tennessee. 

The temporary installation 7 sculptures will be situated around the Germantown Municipal Square comprising 45 acres surrounding the Library, Athletic complex, and Performing Arts Center.  Only one of these works may be potentially sited indoors. A citizen committee shall decide on which of sculptures shall be displayed from the submissions received. The committee shall also determine which sculpture (or, sculptures) of the 7 displayed should be considered for possible purchase by the City of Germantown and permanent placement. All works may be made available for purchase by the public, at the discretion of each individual artist.

 

Application Info

Media:  Art works that are three-dimensional, free-standing sculptures of any and all media suitable for long-term installation in outdoor public spaces are sought for 6 sites. One interior work of art is sought that is suitable for suspension from the ceiling of the City Hall public area. Works should be constructed in such a manner that little maintenance is required while on view. No more than 7 sculptures will be selected for this exhibition.

Eligibility:  Open to all professional artists over the age of 18 living in the United States.

Exhibition duration:  10 months.  October 2012 – August 2013

Stipend:   Each artist selected for the project will receive a $1,000 stipend per sculpture.  Selected artists are responsible for transportation to and from the site, and are encouraged to be on site to oversee installation.  Most installation costs regarding site prep will not be the responsibility of the artist.  Artists are responsible for their own insurance.

Purchases:  One or more works may be purchased at the discretion of the Public Art Committee at the conclusion of the exhibition for inclusion in Germantown’s permanent collection. All works may be made otherwise available for purchase by the general public at the discretion of the artist.

 

Deadline:  Applications must be received by 5:00 PM CST Friday 20 April 2012 (no exceptions).

Selection

A special committee of local citizens and art authorities will be assembled to review the submitted proposals.

 

Selection Criteria

The committee will use the following criteria in the selection process:

1. Artwork should be appropriate for an outdoor setting, or for suspension from an indoor ceiling, and be safe to the public. 

2. Artwork should require little to no maintenance during its display under normal conditions.

3. Artworks selected should reflect a variety of media and styles of work.

4. Artworks should have been created within the last five years.

5. Artworks selected should not have been displayed in similar exhibitions within a 500-mile radius within the last 5 years.

 

Terms

The City of Germantown accepts no responsibility for the costs incurred by the artist in responding to this Call to Artists.

The artist is responsible for transportation of the artwork to and from Germantown.

The artist is responsible for any and all insurance costs covering their work.

The artist is responsible for providing maintenance instructions at time of installation.

 

Application Guidelines

Proposals must include the following:

1. Completed application (included at the end of this RFP)

2. Current resume of no longer than 3 pages, 12pt. font, single-spaced.

3. Artist statement of no more than 150 words, 12pt. font, single-spaced.

4. Between 3-10 color photos of the proposed artwork, submitted as digital JPEG files only, 10MB file size, maximum. These should be included as separate attachments to the email in which the materials cited above are submitted. Each photo should be titled individually.
